Zagana is a stunning valley in southern Gansu province, surrounded by dramatic limestone rock formations and home to traditional Tibetan nomadic communities. Often called 'the last Shangri-La,' this remote destination remains largely unknown to international tourists. The valley features four villages, ancient monasteries, pristine forests, alpine meadows, and spectacular rock walls. Trekking routes wind through the valley, past grazing yaks, through pristine forests, and up to high passes with panoramic views.
The valley floor trek is easy and suitable for most fitness levels. Higher pass routes are moderate. Altitude (3,000m+) can cause mild effects — allow time to acclimatize.
Explore the four Tibetan villages, alpine meadows, and stone canyon at a relaxed pace.
The classic 4-day backpacking route from Dayu Valley to Zagana — one of China's top alpine treks.
Best: June-August (lush green grasslands, wildflowers blooming, comfortable temperatures 15-25°C). September-October (autumn colors — golden barley fields, red-tinged forests, fewer tourists, excellent value). November-May: winter snow transforms Zagana into a white wonderland, but some roads may close and guesthouse options are limited. The famous morning mist at Dali Viewpoint is most dramatic in June-July after rain.
Everything you need to know as an international traveler planning this route in China.
Same China visa requirements. Zagana is in southern Gansu province — a remote area with minimal foreign tourist infrastructure. The nearest airport is Lanzhou (兰州, LHW), a major city with international connections. From Lanzhou, it's a 5-6 hour drive to Zagana. This is one of China's least internationally visited hiking destinations.
No special permits needed for foreigners. Entrance fee: ¥80. Paid at the village entrance — cash only. No registration beyond basic ID check. The area is not yet set up for independent foreign tourism — having a Chinese-speaking guide or fixer is strongly recommended for logistics.
No online booking system exists for Zagana. Guesthouses: ¥80-250/night in Dongwa Village, book via phone or walk-in. For the reverse traverse (4-day trek): must be arranged through a guide service in Min County (岷县) or Lanzhou. We can arrange the complete package. There are no commercial trekking companies targeting foreigners here — you will likely be the only international visitors.
CASH ONLY in most places. Guesthouses, meals, and transport all require cash. The nearest ATM is in Min County (岷县) or Diebu County (迭波县). Bring ¥800-1500 per person for 3 days. Alipay/WeChat Pay is slowly being adopted by some guesthouses, but don't rely on it. International cards are completely useless here.
Step 1: Fly to Lanzhou (兰州). Step 2: Lanzhou to Min County (岷县): bus from Lanzhou South Bus Station (5h, ¥80-120) or private car (4h, ¥600-800). Step 3: Min County to Zagana (扎尕那): minibus or chartered vehicle (2-3h, ¥100-200 per person shared, ¥400-600 private). Roads are mountain roads — narrow and winding. No train access. No direct flights.
Dongwa Village (东哇村): Tibetan family guesthouses, ¥80-250/night. Basic but clean — shared bathrooms, simple Tibetan meals (tsampa, yak meat, butter tea). No luxury options. Electricity available but limited. For the reverse traverse: camping equipment provided by guide service. Bring a sleeping bag liner for comfort.
Tibetan is the primary language; Mandarin spoken by younger residents. Almost zero English. A Chinese-speaking guide is essential — not just for translation, but for navigating logistics in this remote area. Useful phrases: 扎尕那 (zhā gǎ nà) = Zagana; 住宿 (zhù sù) = accommodation; 骑马 (qí mǎ) = ride horse; 带路 (dài lù) = guide the way
Mobile signal is available in Dongwa Village (China Mobile is best). Signal is spotty to nonexistent on most trekking routes. No WiFi. This is a true off-grid experience. Download all offline maps. Inform your contacts that you'll be unreachable for days at a time.
Diebu County Hospital (迭部县人民医院): 0941-5121034. Nearest major hospital: Lanzhou (5-6 hours away). Ambulance: 120, but response time to Zagana is 2-3+ hours. Your guide should carry a satellite phone for the multi-day trek. Altitude: 3,000-4,200m — altitude sickness is possible. Basic medical supplies available at village guesthouses.
Absolutely untouched and authentic. We were the only foreigners in the entire valley. The Tibetan families were incredibly hospitable.
A true hidden gem. The rock formations are stunning and the Tibetan culture is fascinating. Getting there is an adventure in itself.
No special permit required for foreign visitors. However, this is a remote area — travel insurance is strongly recommended. Local guides are available and recommended for the higher passes.
