Mount Hua (Huashan) is the westernmost of China's Five Sacred Mountains and arguably the most thrilling hike in the country. The 'Plank Walk in the Air' — a narrow wooden pathway bolted to a sheer cliff face — has made it famous worldwide. But beyond the adrenaline, Huashan offers breathtaking sunrises above the clouds, ancient Taoist temples perched on impossible peaks, and a deep spiritual atmosphere that has drawn pilgrims for over 2,000 years. The full summit circuit connects all five peaks and takes a full day.
Mount Hua is physically demanding with steep stone stairs, chain-assisted climbs, and exposed cliff pathways. The Plank Walk requires signing a waiver. The full summit circuit (all 5 peaks) takes 8-10 hours. Cable cars can reduce the challenge significantly.
The legendary overnight ascent — start at midnight, reach East Peak for sunrise.
The classic 'West Up, North Down' route — all five peaks, minimal effort.
Stay overnight on the mountain for sunrise, sunset, and star-gazing without the rush.
Best: April-October (peak season). Summer (Jun-Aug) is the most popular for night climbs — warm and festive atmosphere with hundreds of climbers. Spring (Mar-May) and autumn (Sep-Nov) offer the best visibility and comfortable temperatures. Winter (Dec-Feb) is possible but some sections may close due to ice; temperatures at summit drop below -10°C. The Plank Walk and Eagle Flipping Wall close in rain/snow. Sunrise times vary: 05:00-05:30 in summer, 07:00-07:20 in winter.

The Plank Walk is as terrifying and amazing as it looks. Did the night climb for sunrise — absolutely magical. The chains on steep sections are a real help.
Incredible scenery but be prepared — it's steep! We took the cable car up and hiked down, which was perfect. The Taoist temples are fascinating.
