Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) is China's most celebrated mountain landscape, immortalized in paintings and poetry for over a millennium. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for four wonders: grotesquely-shaped pine trees, dramatic granite peak formations, natural hot springs, and the ethereal 'Sea of Clouds' that fills the valleys below the summit. The summit circuit connects multiple peaks via stone stairways carved into the mountainside. Staying overnight on the mountain is essential to witness the famous sunrise.
The ascent involves sustained stair-climbing (6-8 hours to summit), but the paths are well-maintained stone steps. The summit circuit adds another 6-8 hours of ups and downs. Most visitors split it over 2 days with an overnight at a mountain-top hotel. Cable cars available to reduce ascent.

Huangshan is stunning in all four seasons. Spring (Apr-May): rhododendrons bloom, frequent cloud sea after rain. Summer (Jun-Aug): cool escape from city heat, lush green, but crowded during school holidays — arrive before 7 AM. Autumn (Sep-Nov): THE best season — clear skies, spectacular sunsets, golden foliage layers, highest probability of Sea of Clouds. Winter (Dec-Feb): snow and rime ice create a fairy-tale landscape, but some paths close and cable car schedules reduce. The Sea of Clouds is most frequent October through February.

Same China visa requirements. Huangshan is accessible from Shanghai (3h by high-speed train) or Hangzhou (1.5h). Many visitors combine Huangshan with Shanghai or Hangzhou. The 144-hour transit visa exemption applies at Shanghai and Hangzhou airports for eligible nationalities.
No permits needed for foreigners. Entrance fee ¥190 (Mar-Nov) / ¥150 (Dec-Feb), valid 3 days with re-entry. Buy online via Meituan, Ctrip, or at the gate with passport. Cable cars: Yungu ¥90 one-way, Yuping ¥90 one-way, Taiping ¥80 one-way. West Sea Grand Canyon funicular: ¥100 one-way. All require passport.
Entrance tickets and cable cars: book on Meituan or Trip.com. Summit hotels MUST be booked 2-4 weeks ahead in peak season. Top options: Xihai Hotel (西海饭店, ¥800-2000/night), Baiyun Hotel (白云宾馆, ¥600-1500/night), Guangmingding Shanzhuang (光明顶山庄, ¥500-1200/night). These are basic by international standards but the location is unbeatable. Call directly or book via Ctrip.
Alipay and WeChat Pay widely accepted at all scenic area facilities, cable cars, and summit hotels. Summit shops charge ¥15-30 for a bottle of water. Some summit hotels accept international credit cards for pre-booked rooms, but don't rely on it. Bring cash and mobile payment as backup.
Fly to Huangshan Tunxi Airport (TXN) — limited domestic flights. Better option: high-speed train to Huangshan North Station (黄山北站) from Shanghai (3h, ¥200), Hangzhou (1.5h, ¥100), or Beijing (6h). From Huangshan North: bus to Tangkou (汤口, the mountain gateway, 1h, ¥25) or taxi (¥150). From Tangkou: shuttle bus to cable car stations (¥19 each way).
At the base (Tangkou): many hotels from ¥100-500/night. Huangshan International Hotel is comfortable. Tunxi Old Street area in Huangshan city has more options. On the mountain: ¥500-2000/night, basic but well-located. Dormitory beds ¥200-400. Book via Ctrip or call directly. Mountain hotels include breakfast.
Some English at major hotels and cable car stations. Trail signage is in Chinese with some English. Mountain porters are friendly but may not speak English. Useful phrases: 坐索道 (zuò suǒ dào) = take the cable car; 日出几点 (rì chū jǐ diǎn) = what time is sunrise?; 云海 (yún hǎi) = Sea of Clouds; 住山上 (zhù shān shàng) = stay on the mountain
4G/5G signal is good on most peaks and at summit hotels. Signal weakens in the West Sea Grand Canyon. WiFi available at most summit hotels but slow. Download offline maps — Amap (高德) or Maps.me both work well.
Huangshan Scenic Area rescue: 0559-5561111. Huangshan City Hospital (黄山市人民医院): 0559-2543222. Ambulance: 120. The mountain has well-staffed rescue stations. Lightning is a real danger — descend from exposed peaks immediately if storms approach.
The Sea of Clouds at sunrise was the single most beautiful thing I've seen in 20 years of travel. Worth every step. Book the mountain-top hotel early!
