About This Trail

Yubeng is a remote Tibetan village nestled beneath the sacred Meili Snow Mountain (Kawagebo, 6,740m) in northwest Yunnan. For centuries, it was accessible only by foot — the trail over Nanzheng Pass (3,700m) offers jaw-dropping views of the mountain range. The village itself is split into Upper and Lower Yubeng, surrounded by prayer flags, sacred waterfalls, and ancient forests. The trek to the Sacred Waterfall and Ice Lake is a spiritual journey through Tibetan Buddhist landscape. Kawagebo is one of the most sacred mountains in Tibetan Buddhism and has never been summited (climbing is banned by law).

Trail Highlights

  • Sacred Meili Snow Mountain and Kawagebo peak (never summited)
  • Nanzheng Pass views — the most dramatic mountain panorama
  • The Sacred Waterfall pilgrimage site
  • Tibetan village life and culture (prayer flags, monasteries)
  • Ice Lake (Binghu) — glacial lake at 4,000m+
  • Ancient forests with rhododendrons (in spring)

Difficulty

The trek over Nanzheng Pass reaches 3,700m — altitude can be a factor. The daily hiking within the village area is moderate. The trek to Ice Lake is the most challenging section (4,000m+). A good level of fitness is required, but no technical climbing skills needed.

Detailed Gear List

  • Waterproof hiking boots — trail is muddy and wet, especially near Ice Lake
  • Rain jacket and rain pants — weather is unpredictable, rain is frequent
  • Warm layers: thermal base + fleece + down jacket — altitude 3,000-3,800m, cold even in summer
  • Trekking poles — steep descent to Nong Valley is brutal on knees
  • Headlamp — early starts for Ice Lake and sunrise at Kawakarpo
  • Water purification tablets or filter — stream water available but not guaranteed safe
  • Cash (¥200-400 for guesthouses and meals) — no card or mobile payment in most places
  • Sleeping bag liner (optional) — guesthouse bedding is basic
  • Altitude sickness medication (Diamox or Chinese equivalent: 红景天/布洛芬)
  • Power bank — electricity is limited in Yubeng
  • Quick-dry clothing — cotton absorbs moisture and makes you cold

Best Season

🗓

Best: May-June (rhododendrons in bloom, moderate temperatures) and September-October (clearest skies, best Kawakarpo views, stable weather). November-April: snow possible, some passes may close, but dramatically beautiful with snow-capped peaks. July-August: monsoon season — heavy rain, landslides possible, trail very muddy. Kawakarpo is often hidden by clouds in summer. Winter offers the clearest views of the sacred peak but temperatures drop below -10°C at night.

Safety Notes

  • ⚠️ Altitude sickness is the #1 risk — spend at least one night at 3,000m+ before attempting Nanzheng Pass (3,729m)
  • ⚠️ The Nanzheng Pass ascent is steep and can be dangerous in snow/ice — check conditions before departing
  • ⚠️ Ice Lake trail passes through unstable moraine — stay on marked paths, do not approach the lake edge
  • ⚠️ Kawakarpo (6,740m) is a SACRED mountain — climbing it is BANNED by Chinese law. Do not attempt any ascent
  • ⚠️ Guesthouse standards are basic — bring your own sleeping bag liner and toiletries
  • ⚠️ Mobile signal is available in Upper Yubeng but unreliable on trails — inform someone of your plans
  • ⚠️ The Sacred Waterfall trail crosses streams — waterproof boots are essential
  • ⚠️ Tibetan cultural respect: walk clockwise around prayer wheels and stupas, do not touch prayer flags

🌎 Foreigner's Guide

Everything you need to know as an international traveler planning this route in China.

🛂

Visa & Entry

Same China visa requirements. Yubeng is in far northwest Yunnan, near the Tibet border. The nearest airport is Diqing (迪庆/香格里拉), with flights from Kunming. Alternatively, fly to Lijiang and drive 6-7 hours to Deqin. This is a Tibetan area — no additional Tibet Travel Permit is needed for Yubeng (unlike Lhasa), but the area requires respect for Tibetan Buddhist culture.

📋

Permits & Tickets

No special permits needed for foreigners. Entrance fee ¥230 (includes Sacred Waterfall access). Paid at the village entrance — cash or mobile payment. Register at the visitor center. The trail to Ice Lake and Sacred Waterfall is open to all. No guide required but recommended for first-time visitors.

📅

Booking

No advance booking needed for the trail. Guesthouses in Yubeng village: ¥80-300/night, basic Tibetan-style rooms with shared facilities. Popular ones book up in peak season (Oct, May-Jun) — your Lijiang/Shangri-La hotel can help call ahead. There is no online booking system for most village guesthouses.

💳

Payment

CASH IS ESSENTIAL. Guesthouses and meals are cash only (¥80-300/night, ¥40-80/meal). No ATMs in Yubeng village. Mobile payment works at some guesthouses but signal is unreliable. Bring ¥500-1000 per person for 3-4 days. The last ATM is in Deqin town (德钦).

🚌

Getting There

Step 1: Fly/bus to Shangri-La (香格里拉). Step 2: Bus from Shangri-La to Deqin (德钦, 4-5h, ¥65-80). Step 3: From Deqin: minibus or taxi to Feilai Temple (飞来寺, 15 min, ¥15-20) to see the sunrise on Kawakarpo. Step 4: From Feilai Temple: minibus to Xidang Village (西当, the trailhead, 1h, ¥50-80 shared). Roads are winding mountain roads — motion sickness medication recommended.

🏨

Accommodation

Upper Yubeng: Tibetan guesthouses ¥100-300/night, basic rooms with shared bathroom, hot food available. Lower Yubeng: similar options. Feilai Temple area: hotels with sunrise viewing platforms, ¥150-500/night. All are basic — bring a sleeping bag liner and toiletries. Electricity is available but limited. Hot showers may be solar-heated (weather dependent).

🗣️

Language

Tibetan is the primary language in Yubeng; Mandarin is spoken as well. Very limited English. Guesthouse owners are warm and hospitable. Useful phrases: 我要住这里 (wǒ yào zhù zhè lǐ) = I want to stay here; 神瀑怎么走 (shén pù zěn me zǒu) = how to get to the Sacred Waterfall?; 冰湖在哪 (bīng hú zài nǎ) = where is Ice Lake?; 卡瓦格博 (kǎ wǎ gé bó) = Kawakarpo

📶

Connectivity

Mobile signal is available in Upper Yubeng village (China Mobile works best). Signal is unreliable on the Ice Lake and Sacred Waterfall trails. No WiFi. Download offline maps before arriving. Inform your embassy or travel contacts of your itinerary.

🚨

Emergency

Deqin County Hospital (德钦县医院): 0887-8412045. Nearest major hospital: Shangri-La. Ambulance: 120, but response time from Yubeng is 2-3 hours. Altitude sickness is the main risk — descend immediately if symptoms worsen. Guesthouse owners can arrange mule transport for emergency evacuation.

💡 Insider Tip: Wake at 6 AM at Feilai Temple for the sunrise on Kawakarpo — when the peak catches golden light, Tibetan pilgrims around you may weep with devotion. It's one of the most moving sights in Asia.

The most spiritual hike I've ever done. Watching the sunrise hit Kawagebo's peak while prayer flags flutter in the wind... I actually cried. This place is magical.

Remote and beautiful. The Tibetan guesthouse experience was authentic. Be prepared for altitude — take it slow on the pass crossing.

Permit & Entry

No special permit required for foreign visitors. Entrance fee ¥230 (includes sacred waterfall). The road to the trailhead has improved — vehicles can now reach the starting point. Guesthouses in the village are basic but comfortable.
