About This Trail

Tianyan Cave (天眼洞, literally 'Heaven's Eye Cave') is a spectacular karst sinkhole in Chongqing's Beibei District, where nature has punched a 60-meter-deep hole through the earth, creating a natural 'eye' that gazes straight at the sky. Deep inside the cave stands a 32.8-meter stone Buddha statue, bathed in ethereal Tyndall light beams that stream through the opening above — a scene so dramatic that visitors compare it to 'The Lost Tomb.' The site also offers heart-pounding adventure activities: 60-meter rock rappelling ('descending from the sky') and a 200-meter via ferrata route along the cave walls. Located just 1 hour from Chongqing city center, this is the perfect half-day adventure for those wanting to combine urban exploration with wild nature.

Trail Highlights

  • The 'Heaven's Eye' — a natural skylight 60m above, creating dramatic light beams
  • 32.8-meter stone Buddha illuminated by Tyndall light (best at 9-11 AM on clear days)
  • 60-meter rock rappelling — 'descending from the sky' into the cave
  • 200-meter via ferrata — traverse the cave walls on steel cables
  • Forest flower trails — hillside gardens with seasonal blooms
  • Cave temperature: a cool 18-20°C year-round — a natural escape from Chongqing's summer heat
  • Just 1 hour from Chongqing city — perfect half-day adventure

Difficulty

Basic cave exploration is moderate — a 40-minute mountain trail approach with some steep sections requiring rope assistance. The cave interior is flat but the stone paths can be slippery. Via ferrata and rappelling are adventurous but beginner-friendly with professional guides. Not suitable for those with severe vertigo or mobility issues.

Best Season

🗓

Tianyan Cave is accessible year-round. The cave maintains a constant 18-20°C temperature — making it an ideal summer escape from Chongqing's extreme heat (often 35-40°C). Spring (Mar-May) and autumn (Sep-Nov) offer the best weather for the mountain trail approach. Summer (Jun-Aug): the cave is a natural air-conditioned refuge, but the approach trail can be hot — go early morning. Winter (Dec-Feb): cave is warmer than outside, but the approach trail can be icy. Tyndall light beams are best on clear mornings between 9-11 AM, most dramatic in spring and autumn when the sun angle is optimal.

Safety Notes

  • ⚠️ Cave paths can be extremely slippery — wear shoes with good grip, avoid smooth-soled shoes
  • ⚠️ Do not visit during or immediately after heavy rain — paths become hazardous and rockfall risk increases
  • ⚠️ Via ferrata and rappelling: follow all safety instructions from guides. Activities suspended during rain or high winds
  • ⚠️ Stay on marked paths — some cave edges are unguarded and dropping 60m
  • ⚠️ The cave is dimly lit — watch your step and use handrails
  • ⚠️ Children under 12 should not attempt rappelling or via ferrata
  • ⚠️ Mobile signal is weak inside the cave — download tickets and activity bookings in advance
  • ⚠️ Last entry is 17:00 — plan to arrive with enough time for the full experience

The Tyndall light beams hitting the Buddha statue are unreal — like something from Indiana Jones. Did the rappelling and it was the highlight of our Chongqing trip. So cool descending 60 meters into the earth.

Amazing half-day trip from Chongqing. The cave is huge and the light effects are beautiful. The via ferrata was thrilling but our guide made us feel safe. Wear grippy shoes — the cave floor is slippery!
