About This Trail

Genyen (格聂神山) is a 6,204m sacred peak in the Hengduan Mountains of western Sichuan — the 13th holiest mountain in Tibetan Buddhism. The trek penetrates deep into the mountain's southern face, passing through vast alpine meadows carpeted with wildflowers, pristine river valleys,千年-old Lenggu Temple, and the famous 'Eye of Genyen' — a 30-meter circular lake that perfectly reflects the snow peak. This is one of China's last untouched wilderness areas, with virtually no commercial tourism infrastructure. You'll share the trail with yak herds, Tibetan pilgrims, and marmots — almost no other foreign hikers.

Trail Highlights

  • The 'Eye of Genyen' (格聂之眼) — a 30m circular lake that mirrors the snow peak at dawn
  • Tiger Skin Dam wildflower meadows — top-tier alpine flower seas rivaling Xinjiang's Kalajun
  • Lenggu Temple (冷古寺) — a thousand-year-old monastery guarding three sacred treasures
  • The Lonely Tree — iconic solitary tree with Genyen peaks as backdrop
  • Hot River Valley (热梯河谷) — pristine wilderness with blue-purple wildflowers in July
  • Stargazing and Milky Way — zero light pollution, visible to the naked eye
  • Daily sunrise 'Golden Mountain' views — sun hitting Genyen's 6,204m summit at dawn

Difficulty

This is a challenging high-altitude trek at an average elevation of 4,000m+, crossing passes up to 4,980m. Altitude sickness is the primary challenge — you must acclimatize in Litang (4,014m) for at least one night. The terrain includes rocky paths, stream crossings, and steep pass ascents. Prior multi-day trekking experience and altitude acclimatization are required.

Detailed Gear List

  • High-top waterproof hiking boots — streams, mud, and wet meadows throughout
  • Layered clothing: thermal base layer + mid fleece + windproof/waterproof outer shell
  • Warm down jacket — temperature drops sharply at 4,000m+, especially at dawn/dusk (20°C+ daily range)
  • Trekking poles (pair, mandatory) — essential for 4,980m pass crossing and steep descents
  • Sunscreen SPF50+ and polarized sunglasses — extreme UV at 4,000m+, snow blindness risk
  • Rain gear (jacket + pants) — weather changes within minutes, afternoon thunderstorms common in July
  • Altitude medication: start Rhodiola (红景天) 1 week before trip; bring ibuprofen for altitude headaches
  • Glucose powder — rapid energy supplement at altitude
  • Cash (¥500-800) — no ATMs, no mobile payment in most areas
  • Headlamp — for camp use and sunrise viewing
  • Power bank (20,000mAh) — zero electricity on trail
  • Sleeping bag liner for guesthouse/camping use
  • Satellite communicator recommended — zero cell signal in core area
  • Camera with extra batteries — cold drains batteries fast at altitude

Best Season

🗓

Best: June-August (peak wildflower season — the famous 'Monet Garden of the Hengduan Mountains', lush green meadows, comfortable daytime temps 10-20°C). September-October (autumn colors — golden grasslands, clear skies for best snow peak views, most stable weather). November-May: heavy snow closes roads and passes; not recommended. Note: July-August is also rainy season — afternoon thunderstorms are common but usually brief. The flower peak is early-mid July; by late August flowers fade.

Safety Notes

  • ⚠️ Altitude sickness is the #1 risk — spend at least 1 night acclimatizing in Litang (4,014m) before starting
  • ⚠️ ZERO cell signal in the core trekking area — download offline maps (two-step road app: search '格聂南线') and inform family you'll be unreachable for days
  • ⚠️ A local guide is MANDATORY — no independent hiking permitted. The terrain is complex with unmarked stream crossings and potential rockfall areas
  • ⚠️ Weather can change within minutes — always carry windproof/waterproof layer even on sunny mornings
  • ⚠️ The 4,980m pass (C-Line only) involves steep scree and potential snow — only attempt with experienced guides and proper gear
  • ⚠️ Respect Tibetan customs: walk clockwise around temples and mani stones, do not photograph inside temples without permission
  • ⚠️ Leave no trace — carry ALL rubbish out. The ecosystem is extremely fragile at this altitude
  • ⚠️ Yak herds are common on trail — give them a wide berth, do not startle them
  • ⚠️ Nearest hospital is in Litang — carry a basic first aid kit and emergency evacuation insurance
  • ⚠️ 4WD vehicle required for road access — mountain roads are narrow with steep dropoffs

🌎 Foreigner's Guide

Everything you need to know as an international traveler planning this route in China.

🛂

Visa & Entry

Same China visa requirements apply. The nearest airport is Chengdu (CTU/TFU), a major international hub. From Chengdu, it's a 6-7 hour drive to Litang via the scenic but winding G318 highway. Some travelers fly from Chengdu to Daocheng (稻城亚丁机场, the world's highest civilian airport at 4,411m) and drive to Litang, but the rapid altitude gain increases sickness risk.

📋

Permits & Tickets

No special permits for foreigners. Register at the Genyen Town fire checkpoint (格聂镇防火卡点) — your guide will handle this. No entrance fee for the trek itself. The area is not set up for independent foreign tourism — a Chinese-speaking guide is essential for logistics, translation, and safety.

📅

Booking

No online booking system. The trek MUST be arranged through a guide/outfitter. Contact us to arrange the complete package (¥3,500-5,000/person for the 5-day south line, includes transport from Chengdu, guide, camping gear, meals). Expect to be the only international visitors — this trail has virtually zero foreign tourism.

💳

Payment

CASH ONLY on the trail. Guesthouses in Zeba Village accept cash only (¥100-200/night). Guide services require cash or WeChat Pay deposit in advance. Bring ¥1,500-2,000 per person for 5 days. The nearest ATM is in Litang. International cards are completely useless.

🚌

Getting There

Step 1: Fly to Chengdu (major international airport). Step 2: Chengdu to Litang by road — private 4WD vehicle (6-7h, ¥800-1,200) or bus from Chengdu Xinnanmen Bus Station (12h, ¥200-300). The G318 highway crosses multiple 4,000m+ passes including Zhedie Mountain (折多山, 4,298m). Road conditions are rough — expect potholes and landslides in rainy season. No train access.

🏨

Accommodation

Litang: basic hotels ¥100-300/night — spend 1 night here for acclimatization. On trail: Tibetan guesthouses in Zeba Village (¥100-200/night, shared bathroom, simple meals) or camping (tents provided by guide service, ¥included in package). No luxury options exist. Electricity is available in village but unreliable. Bring a sleeping bag liner for comfort.

🗣️

Language

Tibetan is the primary language; some Mandarin among younger residents. Zero English. A Chinese-speaking guide is absolutely essential — not just for translation, but for navigating the completely unsigned trail system and communicating with village families. Useful phrases: 格聂 (gé niè) = Genyen; 冷古寺 (lěng gǔ sì) = Lenggu Temple; 格聂之眼 (gé niè zhī yǎn) = Eye of Genyen; 向导 (xiàng dǎo) = guide

📶

Connectivity

Mobile signal available only in Litang town and Zeba Village (weak China Mobile signal). ZERO signal on 90% of the trek. No WiFi anywhere. Download all offline maps before departure. Inform your contacts that you will be unreachable for 3-5 days. Satellite communicators (Garmin inReach) are available for rent from Chengdu outfitters.

🚨

Emergency

Litang County Hospital (理塘县医院): 0836-8122019. Has an oxygen chamber for severe altitude sickness. Nearest major hospital: Chengdu (6-7 hours away). Ambulance: 120, but response time to the trek area is 2-3+ hours. Your guide should carry emergency communication. Altitude: 3,800-4,980m — altitude sickness is a serious risk. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness. The only cure is descending to lower altitude immediately.

💡 Insider Tip: The Eye of Genyen at dawn — when the water is perfectly still and reflects the snow peak — is one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles in China. Arrive before 6 AM for the best reflection. And don't miss the natural hot springs near the Hot Spring Camp on the C-Line — soaking in hot water with snow peaks overhead after a day of trekking is pure bliss.

★★★★★

The most pristine wilderness I've ever hiked. We were the only foreigners for the entire 5 days. The wildflower meadows with snow peaks behind them were beyond anything I've seen in the Alps or Patagonia.

The Eye of Genyen at sunrise is unreal — the perfect reflection of the snow peak in that tiny circular lake. Lenggu Temple feels like stepping back 1,000 years. Life-changing trek.

Permit & Entry

No special permit required for foreign visitors. Register at the Genyen Town fire checkpoint (格聂镇防火卡点). A local guide is mandatory — independent hiking without a guide is not permitted due to zero cell signal and complex terrain.
