About This Trail

Daocheng Yading Nature Reserve is arguably China's most visually stunning mountain landscape — and Lonely Planet's 'Top Choice in Sichuan.' Three sacred peaks — Chenresig (6,032m), Jambeyang (5,958m), and Chanadorje (5,958m) — rise above turquoise glacial lakes, golden alpine meadows, and pristine forests in a landscape that prompted explorer Joseph Rock to declare it the real inspiration for James Hilton's 'Lost Horizon.' The reserve offers routes ranging from a gentle 4.5km meadow walk to a grueling 11km high-altitude trek to Five-Color Lake at 4,700m. Tibetan pilgrims have walked these paths for over 800 years, believing that circling the sacred peaks washes away a lifetime of sins. In autumn, the landscape transforms into a tapestry of gold, crimson, and emerald that rivals anywhere on Earth.

Trail Highlights

  • Three sacred peaks visible simultaneously from Luorong Pasture — the 'postcard view'
  • Milk Lake (4,500m) — turquoise water with milky-white edges beneath Jambeyang Peak
  • Five-Color Lake (4,700m) — iridescent colors shifting with the light at the highest trek point
  • Luorong Pasture — alpine meadow with yaks, streams, and three-peak panorama
  • Chonggu Temple — where Joseph Rock lived and documented Yading in 1928
  • 35km kora (pilgrimage circuit) around Chenresig Peak for serious trekkers

Difficulty

Moderate to challenging depending on route. The short route (4.5km to Pearl Lake, 3-4h) is easy-moderate at 3,800-4,100m. The long route (11km to Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake, 6-8h) is challenging — steep ascent above 4,500m where altitude sickness is common. The 35km kora circuit around Chenresig Peak is strenuous and requires camping. Acclimatization at Daocheng (3,750m) or Yading Village (3,900m) for at least one night is essential.

Recommended Itineraries

The long route in a single day — feasible but grueling. Only for well-acclimatized, fit trekkers.

Detailed Gear List

  • Insulated waterproof hiking boots with ankle support — cold, wet conditions above 4,500m and rocky terrain
  • Down jacket (compact, packable) — essential for the long route; temperatures at 4,700m can be near freezing with wind
  • Trekking poles — the steep ascent from 4,180m to 4,700m (820m gain in 5km) is brutal without them
  • Glacier glasses (Category 4) or high-quality sunglasses — extreme UV at 4,500m+ with snow reflection
  • SPF50+ sunscreen and lip balm — sunburn risk is severe above 4,000m
  • 2L water + electrolyte sachets — altitude dehydration is insidious; drink before you feel thirsty
  • Rain shell jacket — weather at 4,500m can change from sunny to sleet in 30 minutes
  • Warm hat and gloves — wind chill at Five-Color Lake can drop temperatures dramatically
  • Diamox (acetazolamide) — consult your doctor; altitude sickness above 4,500m is common even for experienced trekkers
  • Power bank — cold and altitude drain batteries quickly
  • Snacks and energy food — limited food options above Luorong Pasture; instant noodles available at Milk Lake (¥15-20)

Best Season

🗓

Best: May-June (rhododendron bloom, snow on peaks, clear mornings) and September-early October (golden meadows, clear skies, autumn colors at their peak). Mid-October can see early snow. July-August is the rainy season — clouds often obscure the peaks (the whole point of visiting) and the trail to Milk Lake can be muddy and slippery. Winter (November-April): the long route above 4,500m is often closed due to deep snow; only the short route to Pearl Sea may be accessible. September has the clearest skies — peak visibility for the three sacred peaks.

Safety Notes

  • ⚠️ Altitude sickness is the primary risk — Daocheng is at 3,750m and the long route reaches 4,700m. Spend at least one night at Daocheng or Yading Village before attempting the long route. If you develop severe headache, nausea, or confusion, descend immediately
  • ⚠️ The steep ascent from Luorong Pasture (4,180m) to Five-Color Lake (4,700m) is physically demanding — go slowly, hydrate constantly, and turn back if you feel unwell
  • ⚠️ Weather above 4,500m changes rapidly — carry rain gear and warm layers even on clear mornings; afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer
  • ⚠️ The electric cart service stops running at 5:00 PM — plan your long route hike to start by 9:00 AM at the latest
  • ⚠️ Horse/pony rides are available from Luorong Pasture toward Milk Lake (¥300-400) but do NOT go all the way to the lake — you still must hike the steepest 1.5km yourself
  • ⚠️ Do not run or rush at altitude — walk at a conversational pace; your body is working 40% harder than at sea level
  • ⚠️ The scenic area can be extremely crowded during Chinese national holidays (Oct 1-7, May 1-5) — avoid these periods
  • ⚠️ Respect Tibetan Buddhist customs: do not photograph inside temples without permission, walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels

🌎 Foreigner's Guide

Everything you need to know as an international traveler planning this route in China.

🛂

Visa & Entry

Standard Chinese visa required. Yading is in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture — foreign visitors should check current access status before travel, as some areas of Ganzi may have temporary restrictions. The nearest airport is Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY) at 4,411m — one of the world's highest civilian airports, with flights from Chengdu (1h) and Chongqing. Alternatively, overland from Chengdu via the G318 highway (12h driving, spectacular scenery).

📋

Permits & Tickets

No special permits for the standard scenic area visit. Foreign visitors can buy entrance tickets on-site with passport (¥146 + ¥120 bus). However, Ganzi Prefecture is classified as a 'restricted area' for foreign travelers — a Foreigners' Travel Permit may be required, processed through a travel agency. Check current requirements before booking. The 35km kora circuit requires a guide and additional permits.

📅

Book entrance tickets via Ctrip or on-site. Accommodation in Yading Village and Riwa can be booked on Ctrip or Trip.com. Book 2+ weeks ahead for September-October peak season. English-speaking guides available through us — contact via WhatsApp or email. Budget ¥300-500/day for guided treks.

💳

Payment

Alipay and WeChat Pay accepted at the scenic area entrance, electric cart stations, and Luorong Pasture vendors. Some Yading Village guesthouses accept cash only. International credit cards NOT accepted. Carry ¥500+ cash for accommodation and meals in the village.

🚌

Getting There

By air: fly to Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY) from Chengdu (1h, ¥800-1,500). Then 1.5h bus to Riwa (the scenic area gateway). By road from Chengdu: 2 days via G318 (the famous Sichuan-Tibet Highway) — spectacular but exhausting. Within the scenic area: mandatory sightseeing bus (1h from entrance to Chonggu Temple area), then optional electric cart (¥80 round trip to Luorong Pasture).

🏨

Accommodation

Riwa town (2,900m): comfortable hotels from ¥200-500/night — best for acclimatization. Yading Village (3,900m): basic guesthouses ¥150-400/night — convenient for an early start but altitude can cause sleep issues. Daocheng town (3,750m): widest range of hotels from ¥150-800/night. Camping inside the reserve is not permitted except on the kora route with permits.

🗣️

Language

Very limited English. Yading Village and Riwa have basic tourist English. Tibetan and Mandarin spoken locally. Useful phrases: 三神山 (sān shén shān) = three sacred peaks; 牛奶海 (niú nǎi hǎi) = Milk Lake; 五色海 (wǔ sè hǎi) = Five-Color Lake; 珍珠海 (zhēn zhū hǎi) = Pearl Sea; 转山 (zhuǎn shān) = kora/pilgrimage circuit

📶

Connectivity

4G signal at Riwa and Yading Village. Signal drops significantly above Luorong Pasture — essentially no signal at Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake. WiFi at some Riwa and Daocheng hotels. Download offline maps before entering the scenic area. The Amap/Gaode app covers the main trails.

🚨

Emergency

Daocheng People's Hospital (稻城县人民医院): 0836-5722120. Yading Village Health Station: basic first aid only. Nearest major hospital: Kangding (8-10h away). Ambulance: 120. Helicopter evacuation: not available. The scenic area has rescue stations along the main route. Altitude sickness: the most common emergency — Daocheng Hospital has an oxygen chamber. If symptoms are severe, descend to Riwa (2,900m) immediately.

💡 Insider Tip: Do the short route on Day 1 and the long route on Day 2 — this natural acclimatization makes a huge difference. And time your visit for the golden hour: Milk Lake at 10-11 AM, when the sun clears Jambeyang Peak and the turquoise water blazes with color. By 2 PM, clouds often roll in and obscure the peaks entirely.

Milk Lake at dawn with Jambeyang Peak reflected in the turquoise water — I've hiked on every continent and this is in my top three views ever. The altitude is no joke though; we spent two nights in Daocheng before starting and still felt it at 4,500m.

Like stepping into a Tibetan scroll painting. The three peaks from Luorong Pasture left me speechless. Do the short route on day one to acclimatize, then tackle the long route on day two — it makes a huge difference.
