The Dangling Village Trek is a hidden gem in the Hengduan Mountains of western Sichuan, far from the crowds of Jiuzhaigou or Siguniang. Over three days, you'll trek to three stunning alpine lakes: Hulu Lake (葫芦海, 4,100m) — a gourd-shaped lake with reflections of snow peaks; Zhuoyong Lake (卓雍措, 4,300m) — a sacred lake beneath the three Dangling gods; and Jiayi Lake (甲依拉措, also called 'Milk Sea' for its milky-white water) — one of China's least-visited alpine lakes, receiving fewer than 200 visitors per year. The trek begins from Dangling Village (3,370m), a remote Tibetan settlement in Danba County known for its pristine forests, wildlife, and traditional stone houses. The route follows the Kelu River valley through ancient conifer forests, rhododendron meadows, and glacial moraines, with dramatic altitude transitions from 3,300m to 4,300m. This is a true off-the-beaten-path experience — no cable cars, no shuttle buses, no crowds.
Moderate difficulty. The D2 trek to Zhuoyong Lake reaches 4,300m with a 800m elevation gain from the village — the main challenge is altitude, not technical difficulty. The trail to Hulu Lake is well-trodden but the extension to Zhuoyong Lake involves a 200m scramble on loose scree. D3's trek to Jiayi Lake is gentler. Overall fitness should be good, with prior acclimatization above 3,000m recommended. Total trekking distance is approximately 20km over 3 days.

For those short on time or not acclimatized for the full 3-day trek, a single-day hike to Hulu Lake is possible from Dangling Village.
Best: June to October. June-August offers wildflower season with rhododendron meadows in full bloom and warmer temperatures, but afternoon thunderstorms are frequent — start early by 6 AM. September-October is the golden season: stable weather, clear skies, and spectacular autumn foliage turning the valleys gold and crimson. The lakes are most photogenic in October with fall colors framing the turquoise water. November-May: snow blocks the upper trails; not recommended.

Most nationalities need a Chinese visa. Dangling is in Sichuan Province (not a restricted area), so no special travel permit is required beyond a standard Chinese visa. Chengdu is the nearest international gateway with direct flights from many global cities. Check current visa-free policies — as of 2024, citizens of France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Malaysia and several others enjoy 15-day visa-free entry to China.

From Chengdu: drive approximately 7 hours via the Chengdu-Ya'an Expressway → Kangding direction → Danba County → Dangling Village. The road from Danba to Dangling is a mountain road (paved but narrow) — 4WD recommended in rain. Public transport: bus from Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station to Danba (總坝, ~5h, ¥120), then shared taxi or local bus to Dangling Village (~2h, ¥40-60). Contact us to arrange private transfer.
Dangling Village has basic Tibetan guesthouses (客栈, ¥150-300/night, shared or private rooms, basic facilities, no WiFi). Limited options — book ahead during peak season (Sep-Oct). For more comfortable stays, Danba County town offers better hotels (¥300-600/night). There is no accommodation at the lakes — all trekking is day-based from the village.
Very limited English. Local languages: Mandarin Chinese and Tibetan dialect. Nearest hospital: Danba County Hospital (丹巴县人民医院), approximately 2 hours drive from Dangling Village. Chengdu emergency: 120 (ambulance), 110 (police). Travel insurance with altitude trekking coverage is strongly recommended. Evacuation from the lakes requires horse or stretcher — 4-6 hours to reach road.
