About This Route

Shanxi's Great Wall No.1 Highway (长城一号公路) is a scenic driving and cycling route that follows the path of the ancient Great Wall through the mountainous border region of Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. Near Zuoyun County (左云县), the route passes alongside Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) Great Wall ruins — weathered earthen ramparts, crumbling watchtowers, and beacon towers that once guarded the northern frontier of the Chinese empire. Unlike the restored Great Wall near Beijing, these are raw, authentic ruins in a dramatic landscape of rolling hills, wind-swept plateaus, and deep valleys. The Motianling (摩天岭) section offers the most dramatic scenery, with the Great Wall following the ridgeline and watchtowers silhouetted against the sky. The cycling route is on a newly-paved scenic road with very little traffic, making it a peaceful and unique ride through history. The area is also known for its ancient Buddhist grottoes and frontier forts.

Route Highlights

  • Cycle alongside authentic Ming Dynasty Great Wall ruins — raw and unrestored
  • Motianling section — dramatic mountain ridge with watchtower silhouettes
  • Shanxi Great Wall No.1 Highway — a newly-paved scenic road with almost no traffic
  • Yuehua Tower — a Ming Dynasty fortress with panoramic plateau views
  • Zuoyun Ancient Town — Ming-era military garrison with city walls
  • Buddhist rock grottoes — 1,500-year-old carvings in cliff faces along the route

Difficulty

Moderate. The route has rolling hills with a few sustained climbs, particularly on the Motianling section. Total elevation gain is about 400m over 50km. The road is newly paved with excellent surfaces. The challenges are: some steep sections (8-10% gradient on Motianling), exposure to wind on the plateau, and remoteness (limited services). Suitable for regular cyclists with moderate fitness. Mountain or hybrid bikes are ideal — road bikes work on the paved sections but may struggle on any unpaved detours.

Recommended Gear

  • Padded cycling shorts (50km with some climbing)
  • Helmet (essential for mountain road cycling)
  • Cycling gloves and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen and windbreaker (plateau is exposed and windy)
  • 2L water + snacks (very limited services on the scenic road)
  • Phone with offline maps (limited signal in mountain areas)
  • Camera — unique Great Wall landscape photography
  • Light thermal layer (plateau temperature drops in evening)

Safety Notes

  • ⚠️The scenic road has very little traffic but no guardrails on some mountain sections — stay on the road
  • ⚠️Wind on the plateau can be strong — be prepared for crosswinds on exposed ridgelines
  • ⚠️Great Wall ruins are fragile — do not climb on or damage the structures
  • ⚠️Limited services — carry enough water and food for the entire ride
  • ⚠️Some sections have loose gravel on the road surface — descend carefully
  • ⚠️Watch for sheep and cattle crossing the road in grazing areas
  • ⚠️Mobile signal is limited in mountain sections — share your route before departing

Bike Rental

Bike rental is very limited in Zuoyun. Datong city (大同, 50km east) has several bike rental shops near the train station and on Yingbin Avenue (迎宾大道). Mountain bikes: ¥50-80/day, ¥300 deposit. Passport required. Quality is basic — inspect brakes and tires. Strongly recommended: rent in Datong and transport the bike to Zuoyun by taxi or bus (¥30-50, 1 hour). Alternatively, bring your own bike — Datong Yungang Airport accepts bikes as checked baggage. No electric bike rentals in the area. Arrange rental in advance — this is not a major tourist destination and walk-in rentals may not be available.

🚌

Getting There

Fly to Datong Yungang Airport (DAT) — flights from Beijing (1h, ¥300-500), Shanghai (2h, ¥500-700), Guangzhou (2.5h, ¥600-800). High-speed train to Datong South Station (大同南站) from Beijing (2h, ¥170), Taiyuan (1.5h, ¥90). From Datong, take a bus or taxi to Zuoyun County (左云县): bus ¥15, 1 hour; taxi ¥80-100, 45 min. The cycling starting point is Zuoyun Ancient Town (左云古城). From there, follow the Great Wall No.1 Highway (长城一号公路) west toward the Motianling section. The route is well-signed with scenic road markers.

Language

English is almost nonexistent in Zuoyuan and the surrounding area. Datong has some English at major hotels (it's a tourist city for the Yungang Grottoes). Useful phrases: 左云 (zuǒ yún) = Zuoyuan; 大同 (dà tóng) = Datong; 长城 (cháng chéng) = Great Wall; 摩天岭 (mó tiān lǐng) = Motianling; 自行车 (zì xíng chē) = bicycle; 长城一号公路 (cháng chéng yī hào gōng lù) = Great Wall No.1 Highway. Download a translation app with offline Mandarin. The Great Wall No.1 Highway has Chinese signage — use GPS to navigate.

📶

Connectivity

4G signal is available in Zuoyuan town and on most of the scenic road, but becomes weak in deep mountain valleys. Download offline maps (Baidu Maps or Gaode/Amap) before starting. WiFi is available at hotels in Zuoyuan and Datong (slow in Zuoyuan). Carry a power bank for GPS navigation. The scenic road is well-marked with kilometer markers and directional signs — navigation is straightforward if you follow the Great Wall No.1 Highway signs.

🚨

Emergency

Zuoyuan County Hospital (左云县人民医院): 0352-7961111. Datong Third People's Hospital (大同市第三人民医院): 0352-5522000. Ambulance: 120. Zuoyuan has a basic hospital for minor issues. For serious emergencies, go to Datong (45 minutes by car). Bike repair: very limited in Zuoyuan — carry your own repair tools. In Datong, there are bike shops. If you have a mechanical failure on the scenic road, there is very little traffic — be prepared to walk or wait for a passing vehicle. The road has some tourist traffic on weekends in summer.

💡 Insider Tip: Combine this cycling route with a visit to the Yungang Grottoes in Datong (a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 1,500-year-old Buddhist cave art) — it's one of China's most spectacular cultural sites and only 50km from Zuoyuan. Go in autumn (September-October) — the plateau turns golden, the weather is crisp and clear, and the Great Wall ruins look most dramatic against the autumn sky. Start early (8 AM) to avoid afternoon winds on the plateau. The Motianling section at sunset is magical — the watchtower silhouettes against the orange sky look like a scene from an ancient Chinese painting. Pack a picnic lunch — there are no restaurants on the scenic road.
