China is a nearly cashless society. Street vendors, metro turnstiles, mountain guesthouses, and even public restrooms accept mobile payments. Cash still works in some places, but relying on it will slow you down — and some vendors simply don't carry change. Alipay is the single most important app to set up before you arrive in China.

The good news: Alipay now fully supports international visitors. No Chinese bank account, no local SIM card, and no Chinese ID required. All you need is your passport, your foreign phone number, and an international Visa or Mastercard. This guide walks you through the entire setup process, step by step.

Download the Alipay App

Alipay (æ”Żä»˜ćź) is developed by Ant Group, an affiliate of Alibaba. It's the most widely used mobile payment app in China, with over 1.3 billion users.

Where to download:

  • iPhone: Search "Alipay" in the Apple App Store. The publisher should be "Ant Group Co., Ltd" or "Hangzhou Technology".
  • Android: Search "Alipay" in Google Play Store, or download the APK directly from the official Alipay download page.
The app is free and available worldwide — you don't need to be in China to download it. The app is approximately 200MB. Download it on your home WiFi before your trip.
Download Alipay before you arrive in China. While you can download it from within China, having it set up in advance means you can start paying the moment you land — for airport food, taxis, and metro tickets.

Switch the Language to English

By default, Alipay launches in Chinese. Switching to English makes the entire setup process much easier — and the English translation is surprisingly complete and well-done.

How to switch:

  1. Open the Alipay app
  2. Tap the "Me" tab (我) at the bottom right — it looks like a person icon
  3. Tap "Settings" (èźŸçœź) at the top right — the gear icon
  4. Tap "General" (通甹)
  5. Tap "Language" (èŻ­èš€)
  6. Select "English"
  7. Tap "Save" — the app will restart in English
Some screens and mini-programs still show Chinese even in English mode. This is normal — the core payment features are fully translated, but some merchant-specific pages may show Chinese text. Use Google Translate's camera feature for those.

Sign Up with Your Foreign Phone Number

You can register Alipay with your home country phone number — you do not need a Chinese phone number. This is one of the biggest improvements Alipay has made for international visitors.

How to register:

  1. Open the Alipay app and tap "Sign Up" or "Register"
  2. Tap the country/region code (default is +86 for China) and select your home country code (e.g., +1 for USA, +44 for UK, +61 for Australia)
  3. Enter your mobile phone number
  4. Tap "Get Verification Code" — an SMS code will be sent to your phone
  5. Enter the 6-digit verification code
  6. Set a login password (follow the password requirements shown on screen)
  7. Agree to the terms of service
SMS verification codes can take 1–5 minutes to arrive, especially for international numbers. If you don't receive the code within 5 minutes, tap "Resend." If it still doesn't arrive, try again later or switch to a different network (WiFi vs cellular). Some carriers block international SMS — check with your provider if you consistently don't receive codes.
Use the phone number you'll have with you in China. If you're bringing your home SIM with international roaming, use that number. If you plan to buy a Chinese SIM, you can register with your home number first and change it later in Settings.

Link Your International Credit or Debit Card

This is the step that makes everything work. Alipay now accepts international credit and debit cards — no Chinese bank account needed. When you link a card, Alipay charges it directly for each payment, similar to how Apple Pay works with your credit card.

Name must match exactly. If your card says "JOHN A SMITH" but you enter "John Smith," the verification may fail. Enter your name exactly as printed on your card. If your card doesn't have a middle name printed but your bank account does, try both with and without the middle name.

It creates a virtual prepaid card that you load with Chinese yuan („) upfront.
